No One Negatively Impacts Themselves

I’ve been reading through Coaching Agile Teams lately and the following line stuck out to me:

No One Negatively Impacts Themselves.

When next you are in a budget meeting, a Sprint Retrospective, a daily huddle or an intimate dinner date consider this statement. The person from whom you are sitting across is speaking or acting out out of self-interest. Chances are they are not ignorant or misguided. No, that would be too easy.

Chances are they are doing the best they can for a reason that seems reasonable, even laudable to them.

Are you reacting to them like they are automatically gainsaying you? Are they just an obstacle you need to overcome? Are their objections laughable and to be swept aside?

Consider that the person you across from you is a human with valid motivations, hopes and circumstances…as are you.
